Even with the best built kitchens with full backs there is always a possibility of mice getting in. I discovered this a couple years back. Little bugger – I actually do think they are cute but outside the house! – got into my Lazy Susan Cabinet – it squeezed between where the two doors were hinged together – they can squeeze through a dime size space.

Keep it tidy. Don’t leave crumbs overnight on the counter, floor, etc.

Bulk items in plastic bags – transfer to glass/plastic containers with lids – nothing more gross then finding mouse turd in stuff and having to throw $ in the garbage. Wish I had done that with the lazy susan cabinet from the beginning!

Inspect for areas they might be coming in and try using steel wool stuffed into spaces (think where pipes come into the sink cabinet, etc.)

Peppermint oil – mice apparently don’t like the scent. A couple of drops with 1/2 water, 1/2 vinegar for cleaning (just don’t leave wet on wood/painted finishes)

Bounce Sheets – original scent – they don’t like that scent either – so save those for cabinets that don’t contain food items.

If your cabinets are beyond mouse proofing maybe it’s time to give us a call? We specialize in custom Canadian made kitchens with solid full backs!

A Home Renovation does mean your life is going to be interrupted. But it should only be for a set amount of time. That is why reviewing a company should be a prerequisite prior to making contact.- you need to know if the company adhere’s to reasonable timelines and actually keep them according to their clients. If the majority of the reviews support that the company kept to timelines (unless a completely unforeseen incident occurred) and showed up when they said they were going to – that may be a company worth looking into for your project. We provide a timetable in print that details who is at the job site and what is being accomplished that week and by who. This really helps our company and the client keep track of the progress being made. It takes something very unexpected or a client adding more to the renovation after it has already begun for the timetable to be shifted.

The reason some companies show up for a couple of days and then disappear is usually because of things being added to current projects. This creates chaos for all clients, and the contractors. To avoid this, we require clients with current in progress projects to be reasonable if they want to add to their project as we do not shift other client timetables in favour of their project. What then happens? If we can do it in the scheduled timetable – it may mean longer days of putting up with our crew or it may mean our company scheduling it in later. Thankfully, our crew is pretty likeable!

Not to be confused with cheap cabinets, Pay Less Kitchens offers great savings when you are comparing our Canadian made custom kitchen cabinetry with other high end quality kitchen cabinetry companies. Not to be confused with Pre-fab, off-shore cabinetry – those would be budget friendly, but not necessarily stand the test of time cabinets. Custom made is a name that has been used too easily by pre-fab kitchen companies. True custom means your kitchen cabinets are ordered, then built and have no unreasonable size restrictions – allowing you to avoid unnecessary filler pieces and built to the floor plan that works for your home. If our name could have been longer we would have said “Pay Less for Quality Custom Kitchen Cabinets Then So and So’s Company” – but that seemed a little long for a name – and difficult to fit onto our signage and installer t-shirts. To know more about our company check out the rest of our website!

Painted Kitchen Cabinetry – how will you know if that paint finish will last? Let’s start by saying there are a lot of fine craftsmen out there. But you do need to have the space, proper tools and techniques for a painted finish to last. All that time you are opening doors – chances are, finger nails are going to rub against the finish, not to mention just everyday use. One of the reasons we decided to go with Cabico for our cabinetry was #1 Canadian-made and #2 Quality in construction and finishes – their paint finished was undeniably the best we had seen and touched. Many other companies, to save money, just spray the finish on which leads to paint easily peeling off. The Process – A solid colour finish is a multi-layered finish. A solid color primer is applied first, then hand-sanded to a smooth surface, followed by a self-leveling solid color top coat, and finally oven-dried to a smooth, hard finish. And that is what makes a paint finish last.

We actually want people to test the painted surface against normal use. Thus we keep off cuts like crown, valances, kicks, etc for this reason (and so they can use them when out shopping for other materials and finishes to go with their kitchen cabinetry, such as tiles, wall colours, etc). These off cuts are handy to allow clients to try to and scratch the surface with their fingernails. You want to be confident that the painted surface is going to last against normal use.

Another way of knowing how good a finish is? The warranty! If there’s no warranty or very limited time, chances are the finishes are not going to last as long as you would like.

I find that many who visit our showroom are under the impression that they can put a hot pot from their stove directly onto a natural stone or engineered quartz counter. Although some natural stone counters may stand up to this, not all will and could crack – and your warranty will probably not cover this mishap. The best way to avoid this happening is to use something like a protective hot pad or trivet. In somewhat scientific terms – Thermal shock occurs when a thermal gradient causes different parts of an object to expand by different amounts. This differential expansion can be understood in terms of stress or of strain, equivalently. At some point, this stress overcomes the strength of the material, causing a crack to form.

In simple terms your counter isn’t just cracking, it’s actually expanding thus causing the crack to potentially happen. Take Natural Stone for example – it is a natural product and even though the stone itself may be able to withstand strong heat there could be pockets of mica and other elements in it that you cannot see but expand when exposed to heat. This can happen anytime during the life of your counter. With engineered quartz this will most likely happen, as you need to remember that it contains natural and man made product – which do not necessarily react well when exposed to extreme heat. These are still great materials to use for a residential kitchen – and I have used hot pads/trivets all my life. So to me no big deal!

This has got to be the most revolutionary product to be used for solid kitchen counters!

Like quartz in that it is a solid surface BUT

The most scratch and heat resistant material on the market! Actually used for a variety of purposes. In Europe for fences because graffiti can just be washed off!

So far only available in Canada in 2 cm thickness, so not able to have a built up edge …… but a great modern look with a mitred or straight edge. And the rumour is that a 3 cm thickness will be available in the future!

Currently the colour does not go all the way through, so you are going to see a different colour around the lip edge of the sink and counter edges – it’s a contemporary look (see pic of counter with sink below – notice the sink lip edge is greyish white without the veining going through), but they will be introducing material where the colour of the surface will go through the whole slab – and to some that means a look more pleasing to their eye. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

We are very excited about Dekton and will have it in our showroom shortly!

Most people are naturally drawn to either contrast or monochromatic colour themes – and there really is no wrong choices between the two. However one should give careful consideration to their colour choices based on their lifestyle and future plans.

If you are considering moving and although you may really love an off-beat eclectic red for your kitchen cabinets will it affect the sale of your home? In other words, will potential buyers love it too – here you might want to play it safe and go with more “standard” or “timeless” colour choices. Use smaller accent pieces to add some eclectic love to your space.

Of course if you are planning to love your home long term, then with careful planning of the complimentary colours and accent pieces you should go with your hearts desire – just be sure to get advice from a professional – sometimes you may not see all the quirks of a colour that a professional may know about – and you want make informed decisions.

Consider your lifestyle, are you drawn to black cabinets, but dust or contrasting pet hair will drive you up the wall – you may want to consider lighter colours – the last thing you want to do is regret a colour choice – cause re-painting cabinets is costly and a lot of work.

How far in advance of your ideal reno start date should you contact a kitchen contractor? Ideally, you will want to book a kitchen showroom consult three to six months ahead of when you will actually want to start the renovation. With the return of warm weather, thoughts turn to home improvements – unfortunately so does everyone else. So much so, that when you think you have lots of time to inquire about booking a kitchen renovation start time, you may find everyone else had the same plan and may have already booked up the time-frame you desired.

Google kitchen cabinets in your area, look and read google reviews to determine reputable kitchen contractors who provide quality product, service and honour budget (in other words they don’t start robbing you blind with “not included items” after you put your deposit down) – then you should inquire how far in advance you need to book the project start date. This will vary throughout the year due to projects already booked with the kitchen contractor and their supply turn around times – especially when it comes to custom kitchens. Custom kitchens means it’s going to to built for you and is not just sitting on a shelf waiting to be picked.

Turn around times can vary a lot from a couple of weeks to a couple of months to even six months if you are looking at a “hot time” for kitchen renovations – generally summer and fall are overly booked times of the year for kitchen contractors.
